What is Hold Time?
Hold time is the approved period during which a material, intermediate, or bulk product can be stored under specified conditions before the next manufacturing step, without adversely affecting its quality, safety, purity, or potency.
What is a Hold Time Study?
A Hold Time Study is a documented study conducted to establish and scientifically justify the maximum allowable storage time for raw materials, intermediates, bulk products, or other relevant materials under defined storage conditions.
In a Bangladeshi pharmaceutical company, the study is generally coordinated by QA and Validation, with support from Production and QC.
Why is a Hold Time Study required?
Important note:
WHO has published specific guidance for hold-time studies in pharmaceutical manufacturing, and Bangladesh DGDA also lists WHO's hold-time guidance among its GMP-related documents. The key reference is WHO Technical Report Series 992, Annex 4 (2015).
